Matic Wines
MATIC WINES – Grušova, Slovenia (Štajerska)
Matija Žerjav, known simply as Matic is a young, motivated, and thoughtful winemaker.
He is part of a younger generation of winemakers not satisfied with the status quo.
While he understands and respects the history and methods passed down from his grandfather,
he is also not afraid to take chances and think outside the box.
All Matic wines are dry farmed, and hand harvested on his 8-ha estate located in northeastern Slovenia,
just outside the city of Maribor.
Matic uses only native yeasts when fermenting the wines.
He practices biodynamic farming methods and bottles all wines by hand with love.
He uses minimal SO2, only when necessary.
Having recently converted the winery to solar power, his hope is to be certified as carbon neutral in the coming years.
Being a good steward of the land is of the utmost concern.
All his classic wines see stainless steel, no oak, and feature the trademark racing acidity known for the region of Štajerska.
Matic has also been a strong proponent of Šipon (the local name for the grape Furmint) and believed he could
create a fantastic sparkling with it. His bottling of Mea Pet Nat shows the true strength of the grape
and we are happy he chose to do this.
Additionally, Matic is experimenting with longer skin-contact wines, aging wines in clay and concrete,
and other more ancient methods of winemaking.
The future is bright, and we are happy to be along for the ride with Matic.

100% Riesling, organic farmed and hand harvested in Slovenia by young winemaker Matic.
Macerated grapes age with the skins for 214 days while aging in a clay amphora for a total of 16 months.
It has a deep lemon or even orange-like hue in the glass. At first, there are notes of stewed apples or apple cider.
Given time to breathe or decanted, you will find notes of lemon, oranges, honeysuckle, and later on, dried rose petals.
This wine is bone dry and due to the skin-contact, there’s a slight tannic element in your mouth.
Flavors of orange zest, sweet flowers, and green apple are abundant. It has a long finish with mineral notes and peach pit flavors lingering.
It’s very easy to drink with light and well integrated tannins, excellent acidity and tons of flavor.
A special wine by any measure.
